How do you cut alert noise without losing real incidents?
You cut alert noise by fixing three things: thresholds that were never tuned, duplicate alerts from overlapping tools, and alerts with no responder or action. Tuning alone fails — the estate also has to be consolidated, because most noise is a symptom of tool sprawl rather than a threshold problem.
Alert fatigue is an operational failure, not a nuisance
When a NOC receives hundreds of alerts a day, the critical one looks like the other ninety-nine. Industry research consistently finds a large share of IT leaders ignore most of the alerts they receive — not because they are careless, but because triage has become impossible.
The cost is invisible until it is not: incidents detected by users instead of monitoring, and teams that have quietly stopped trusting the alerts.
The three real causes
Untuned thresholds. Set at installation, never revisited, and wrong for the traffic the system now carries.
Overlapping tools. Two platforms monitoring the same host generate two alerts for one problem. Consolidation removes whole categories of noise at once.
Alerts with no action. If nobody owns the alert and nothing is expected to happen, it is noise by definition — regardless of severity.
What optimisation looks like
- An inventory of what fires, how often, and who responds.
- Thresholds tuned against real baselines, not defaults.
- Overlapping platforms consolidated rather than tuned in parallel.
- Alert-to-responder routing defined, so every alert has an owner.
The commercial side matters too: estate and licence cost usually falls as noise falls, because consolidation removes tools rather than adding them.
How we approach it
We optimise in that order — inventory, tune, consolidate, route. It is part of our Monitoring & Observability services practice.
