How do you migrate monitoring platforms without a visibility blackout?
You migrate monitoring in parallel, not in cutover: run the new estate alongside the old until the new one proves equivalent coverage, then retire the old. Migration risk is not the platform change itself — it is the window where nothing is watching and nobody notices.
Why migrations go wrong
A monitoring migration looks low-risk compared with migrating the systems being monitored. That is the trap. The old platform is quiet, familiar and load-bearing: everyone has learned where to look, and its thresholds encode years of hard-won knowledge.
Replace it in one weekend and you lose that knowledge silently. Coverage gaps do not announce themselves. You find out when something fails and no alert arrives.
What a controlled migration looks like
- Inventory before migration. Know what is monitored today, what its thresholds mean, and which alerts have real responders behind them.
- Parallel run. Both estates watch the same systems until the new one demonstrably matches coverage.
- Documented parity. Gaps are tracked and closed as an explicit list, not assumed away.
- Decommission with evidence. The old platform is retired when parity is proven, not when the new one is installed.
When it is a modernisation, not a migration
Ageing platforms often can’t be ported cleanly — the architecture they were built for no longer exists. In those cases the work is a redesign: current coverage across cloud and on-premise, consolidation of overlapping tools, and signal definitions that survive the next change.
